Deeds are judged by intentions

Intention (niyyah) is an important matter, as it is the spirit of deeds through which deeds become valid, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Actions are but by intentions and each person will have but that which he intended.” Rather the place of intention is the heart. If a person utters something by mistake that goes against what is in his heart, then what counts is what he intended, not what he said.

An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Muslims are agreed upon the great importance of this hadith, the great benefits it teaches and the soundness of this report. Then he said: The majority of scholars, including linguists, scholars of usool and others, said that the wording of the hadith means that deeds are strongly connected to intention, as it affirms what is mentioned that negates everything else.

Deeds are judged by intentions

From this comprehensive hadith, we could deduce important points about our intentions, including:

1

Intention does not turn sin into a good deed

2

Actions are not valid unless there is an intention

3

Intentions affect deeds, it may turn the permissible act to obedience , and obedience into sin.

There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes reformed the whole body becomes reformed but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.

This hadith has valuable points:

1

First Value

A good deed is linked to the goodness of the heart, and its corruption is linked to the corruption of the heart. Al-Hafiz bin Rajab, may Allah have mercy on him, said: If people reform their hearts till there is no wish in their hearts except what Allah wills, their organs will be reformed too, they will merely move for Allah AWJ, and what pleases him.

2

Second Value

The Muslim has to focus on reforming his heart, he has to always examine it, avoid anything that might spoil his heart, whether doubts or desires, because if the heart is sound and reformed, all the organs of the body will follow it. The callers to Islam and teacher should focus on reforming the hearts of people, if hearts are reformed people will abide by the shari'ah of Allah, and aspire to His reward.

3

Third Value

What helps in reforming hearts: Supplicating to Almighty Allah, restoring to Him, constantly calling on to Him. Almighty Allah tells us the supplication of those well-grounded in knowledge in who say: “Our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after you have guided us. Grant us Your mercy. You are indeed the Giver of all bounties." (Ali Imran: 8)
